REVIEW: 'Fall of the House of Usher' at Nashville Opera 2009/11/15

I found myself grinning from ear to ear the entire performance. It was one of those rare times when all aspects come together in a live performance to make you feel you have witnessed something truly on the edge of the art. Usually this kind of synergy is accomplished with careful editing in a production room, but when you experience this in a live performance, of any medium, you consider yourself blessed to have been a part of it. I was thrilled that the artistic staff took such a chance here in Nashville with this production and was honored to be there. Bravo!

I am Ray Walker--Jesse Walker's Dad. I couldn't agree with her more...I, too, was disappointed that we would not see Topol, but I was confidant that the cast and understudies would prevail. In this ensemble, David Brummel was playing the butcher Lasar Wolf, so, not only did he have to move up to the role of Tevye, but many other actors had to play roles other than those normal in this cast. Mr. Brummel was nothing short of sensational! I found Mr. Brummel's performance to be flawless! The two curtain calls and standing ovations he and the cast received were absolutely justified! The overall production--from lighting to sets to the vocal capabilities of the actors was exceptional, and the production was beautifully staged! Mr. Brummel's Tevye was comedic, heartwarming, sensitive and vibrant. He paid homage to Chaim Topol. No matter how many times one has played a role, to transition into the lead and to not miss a beat or a piece of stage business is not only remarkable, but it is truly magical. Kudos, Mr. Brummel, for a masterfully executed Tevye! (And for making my daughter's birthday magical instead of disappointing!<3

Peter, your pictures are gorgeous here. A fitting celebration of the occasion. That last shot of the board in the lobby gets me every time. I actually returned to the theater at box office opening next morning to grab my own shot, but somebody had scoffed Kiril's nameplate. Just a gaping hole in the board, as there is now in the cast. Other Billys will come and go, but the Tony-winning trio will be remembered. Of course an OBC recording was deserved and would have helped. Obviously some important people felt otherwise.

My father took me to see this performance as a birthday surprise, as The Fiddler on the Roof, is one of my all time favorite musicals. (I am turning 23 and he has taken me to many, many shows.) When we arrived at the Opera House there was a note posted on the door. Unfortunately for us, Topol was unable to perform at our matinee, and his understudy would be playing the role of Tevye. Our disappointment was quickly turned around when the Musical began starring David Brummel as Tevye. His performance was phenomenal! I couldn't have imagined someone else playing the part better. Brummel's familiarity with the role was beyond clear considering his resume includes the role for Tevye in five different productions. The life, energy, and love he put into his character was well received and carried by the rest of the cast. Bravo to Brummel!!!! Alas, we bid Topol farewell, however, I will surely continue to enjoy him in his prime vigor in the original motion picture, a DVD in which my father lovingly gifted me<3

REVIEW: 'Fall of the House of Usher' at Nashville Opera 2009/11/15

This was an AMAZING production. If you fail to see the artistic merit in it---perhaps you should rethink your labeling as "a great fan of opera." The opera, if you did any homework at all, is only BASED on the Poe text. It has it's own libretto---it is an interpretation--not a copy, as are most stage adaptations of literary work. Making negative comments only hurts the medium you claim to admire, so if you refuse to appreciate the creative genius behind this work, I suggest you keep your disparaging comments to yourself!

Too bad the kids weren't allowed to come out for autographs and photos until after midnight. A lot of disappointed fans waiting out there. Absolutely nothing was done in the theater before or after the show, not even a welcome from director Daldry who was obviously present. Something should have happened! A gesture of appreciation toward the fans who filled the theater for a year would have been nice.

That picture of all the Billy's at the top really shows how big Trent and David have gotten over the last year. (And it also makes me miss Kiril even more!) The new kids are adorable. Why no photos of the other adults in the cast? I know they were all there.
