Photo Exclusive: Shingo Katori Backstage at 'TALK LIKE SINGING' 2009/11/15
Posted: 11/16/2009
Just because he did some play in New York doesn't make him "sugoi." Anyone with money and sponsors could rent some place in the city, do some singing and talking, and call that a "off-broadway" show. I'm having a hard time understanding why they wanted to come to NY to do this. It's wrong for the Japanese media to say the play was successful, when the only people who are going to see it are Japanese. No American (or Japanese) would understand their English (who was their targeted audience anyway?), and I'd be embarrassed if the world thought that's what Japan really thinks of a "successful" play is.

STAGE TUBE: NINE Quick Clip - Kate Hudson 'Cinema Italiano' 2009/11/14
Posted: 11/16/2009
I didn't realize they were adding any new numbers to the film (like this one, 'Cinema Italiano'). I suppose they did so because they felt it would make the score more 'commercial'. Let's hope this is the extent of the damage done in the translation from stage to screen.

Robin Williams Will Not Play Susan Boyle In Bio Pic 2009/08/26
Posted: 11/16/2009
Why is there a 'Biography' film about Susan Boyle? She hasn't done anything brilliant, like cure a major disease or anything worth mentioning. I mean in all fairness, she did win a talent show (which it is), I congratulate her. But to make a film about her fuckin life is a bit...retarded shall we say. In my opinion it's just another way for companies to make money and if that's the case, I have lost hope for those people who entertain solely to make a profit. 'Jedward' is the new 'CRAZE' in the UK, and they have apparently been offered a deal by Disney to star in a film. Let's face it, neither of the little fuckers can sing, they dance like twats and they are THE GAYEST people to grace television. If people like that get offered film contracts then what is the point? What's the point in TALENTED people auditioning for parts when all the have to do is, well not really have any talent at all. Using the media to influence people is going to be a MAJOR problem, this is how it starts.

REVIEW: LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS at Senior Center for the Arts 2009/11/10
Posted: 11/16/2009
For this being my first time at the center for a show - it may be my last as a result of this production. Agreed that those portraying Audrey and Seymour are wonderful and agreed that Trey Palmer should have had a bigger part with his fantastic voice - this production was hard to sit through.

Beale, Shaw, and Blanchett Set for National Theatre's 2010 Season 2009/11/13
Posted: 11/16/2009
Dear Broadway World, I'm afraid this story is incorrect: Cate Blanchett is not appearing in The White Guard. The play is in a new version by Andrew Upton, who runs the Sydney Theatre Company with his wife Cate Blanchett - that's the only connection! Further details about the production and the cast can be found at: www.nationaltheatre.org.uk. best wishes, Lucinda Morrison, Head of Press, National Theatre

What was up with this so-called "infection" wacko pat had in her side, bleeding? Was that a real thing or was she just faking to get sympathy? The movie didn't really explain it. I haven't read Ann Rule's book yet. I hope it is explained in the book!

Unless I missed the end of the sexual revolution, and the resolution of unsolved gender/ identity issues. 2nd- I saw the show twice and waited at the sold out last weekend try and get back in, maybe you got lost and went into the wrong place, I am about the hardest person to please, especially when it comes to "Rocky", that production was beautiful. You had better believe that I will be at that fundraiser!

Actually, I was hoping the reviewer of the show might find it worthwhile to mention the creative team behind the production. Apparently, giving the whole story away was more important than, say, actually REVIEWING the show.

Amateur at its best - the reworking of this magnificant musical was completely overdone and overshadows any great moment that this musical could create.

Broadway Blog - RAGTIME Reviews 2009/11/15
Posted: 11/16/2009
This is a truly stirring and stunning production of a brilliant, intelligent, heartfelt musical. To say it isn't Sondheimesque in its complexity should be a compliment. Why should everyone have to be Sondheim? When people do imitate Sondheim, they get slammed for it (rightfully). Ahrens and Flaherty and Mc Nally took an almost impossible assignment -- the multi-leveled and multi-plotted book by E. L.Doctorow -- and created a cohesive, touching and thought-provoking work. Ben Brantley wasted the first page of his review blathering on about the original production. it sounds like he wrote his review before seeing the production (as usual). Marcia Milgrom Dodge's direction is respectful, lucid and imaginative. I loved it.

I saw the original and found it stirring, but I feel I enjoyed this revival even more. I feel it is more comfortable in its current theatre, and the story even more topical. I saw it Saturday night and it received a well-deserved standing ovation! It is one of the best productions I have seen in a long, long time! Bravo!

REVIEW: 'Fall of the House of Usher' at Nashville Opera 2009/11/15
Posted: 11/16/2009
What? This was the worst operatic production I have ever seen in my life! It was a poor interpretation of the Poe original, and there was so little singing that you can hardly call it an opera. Frankly, it was painful to sit through, which is a particularly harsh criticism as I am a great fan of opera.
