With all the shows one can see in NYC, it's refreshing to see a small theater production that exudes such talent and passion. Three if by Air, performed by the General Mischief Dance Theater at the Manhattan Movement and Arts Center, is a warm and charming presentation by local actors and acrobatic style performers. The mission of the General Mischief Dance Theater is to reinforce just how powerful joy and laughter can be communicated through ideas, and encourage others to self-express through movement. Three if by Air does just that.

The play starts out with the acting out of one's average morning routine - from the struggle of waking up to the ringing of an alarm clock to the hustle and bustle of the early morning train commute. The scene is clever and spot-on. The next scene is a dream sequence that brings out a much deeper sentiment. Here we see a dancer envisioning his dream girl. As he yearns for her, we see that the girl is right in front of him on an aerial rope; close, but always seemingly out his reach. The dancers play a back and forth game that, combined with the music, instills a mix of emotions from the audience.

The rest of the scenes are a combination of the first two - some fun and light-hearted, while others evoking deeper feelings. Although the set and lighting are minimal, the ensemble of actors and aerial rope performers put forth much effort to give the audience a great experience.

Another great thing about the play worth noting is the use of audience participation throughout. Whether pre-rehearsed or not, the use of some members of the audience early on in the show initiated a feeling of intimacy amongst the viewers. This transformed the setting to feel warm and friendly. All the actors are worth seeing, but special standouts include the two aerial rope performers, whose on stage performances gave a spark of energy to the overall production.

Overall THREE IF BY AIR was delightful and a charming experience.
