BWW Reviews: THE YORKVILLE NUTCRACKER in Olde New York Enchants

'Tis the season for The Nutcracker. And, The Yorkville Nutcracker has some elements that make the rendition wholly unique. The beloved holiday ballet takes the audience on a tour of Olde New York's most beloved landmarks, a holiday party at Gracie Mansion, dancing at the Crystal Palace at New York's Botanical Garden and skating in Central Park, and carefully incorporates them into the scenes we treasure. The performance will resonate with audiences long after the season passes.

Presented by Dances Patrelle, The Yorkville Nutcracker had its 18th Annual production at the Kaye Playhouse of Hunter College from December 5th through December 8th. With choreography by Francis Patrelle, the performance was a blend of the Dances Patrelle company dancers along with the children who hail from dance schools throughout the city. Guest performers of the New York City Ballet thrilled the audience; Jennifer Ringer as the Sugar Plum Fairy and Jared Angle as the Cavalier.

My daughter was once in a production of The Nutcracker with professional dancers when she was very young and her excitement was contagious in our home. I was treated to the same excitement when I attended the The Yorkville Nutcracker. Proud family members joined with dance enthusiasts to celebrate ballet. So many talented young dancers took to the stage as party goers, reindeer and angels to round out the charming scenes. The Nutcracker has always had a special appeal for children, and was even more appealing when children are so well integrated into the cast of dancers.

The costume design by Rita B. Watson was stunning as was the scenic design by Gillian Bradshaw-Smith. An annual event, The Yorkville Nutcracker is a production that promises to please all those wishing to enjoy the spirit of the holiday classic with some lovely flourishes that celebrate the spirit of New York City.
