The question we might ask ourselves is: "how do you see yourself?" Actors ask this and get asked this a lot; what role do you see for yourself? As a vocal coach and music director I will ask a performer what roles they'd like to perform, as a way to understand their aspirations but also how they see themselves.

In some audition scenarios, actors are asked which roles they would like to be considered for. I've sat through many an audition where the response is "any." While it's great to be open and willing to take any role (it's a job), sometimes having a clear idea of which roles you see yourself playing is better than simply saying whatever is available.

I find this happens to young actors, who might not have considered which role they would be right for, though it's not exclusive to age. When there is an open call for the new Broadway show, or a the theatre department at your college is holding auditions, having a clear mind about what you want only makes the audition better.

Being specific tells the director how you see yourself, and that you know the show. Then the audition becomes more specific and tailored to your goals.
