BALAM Dance Theatre to Return to Hunter, New York to Present DISCOVER THE SPLENDORS OF SPAIN, 7/7-11

BALAM Dance Theatre (BALAM) will return to Hunter, New York from July 7-11 to present Discover the Splendors of Spain. BALAM, a New York City-based world dance company, will provide a new arts and educational enrichment program workshop inspired by the diverse dance traditions of Spain for children from the communities of Hunter and Tannersville, New York.

The culmination of the company's second residency will be a performance of Discover the Splendors of Spain with the children on Friday, July 11 from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Hunter Elementary School auditorium, 7794 Main Street in Hunter, New York. The performance is free and open to the public.

A highlight of the event will be the children's presentation of their own choreographic explorations of three iconic Spanish forms: a 17th century courtly Pavana, a joyful Sevillanas, and a bullfight pantomime integrated into BALAM's performance. Each of these students' works will explore fundamental concepts of dance learning, as articulated through the New York State Board of Education's arts guidelines.

The New York City-based company offers a new vision of contemporary dance by combining ballet, modern and diverse cultural dance styles from around the world and historic periods. BALAM's Inma Heredia, the world's first and only Flamenco standup comedian from Seville, Spain, will perform as hostess, as well as sing and dance popular Spanish folkloric melodies. Barbara Romero, BALAM's Spanish Escuela Bolera dance expert, performing with BALAM's artistic director Carlos Fittante, will join Ms. Heredia. The company will perform in costume to traditional music and play Spanish castanets.

This arts intensive residency is presented through the Catskill Mountain Performing Arts Program at the Hunter-Tannersville Summer School Program with funding received in part through the New York State Council for the Arts and Friends of BALAM Dance Theatre.

Last summer, BALAM was in residence in the Hunter-Tannersville Summer School Program for one week. The company implemented a workshop inspired by the Balinese Kecak, the monkey chant, for children from the communities of Hunter and Tannersville, New York and ended the residency with a performance.
