Tomorrow, August 15th, the curtain will rise on Austin Theatre Project's tenth mainstage production. Godspell, the Broadway hit from the composer of Wicked and Pippin, is a delightfully engaging musical based on the story and teachings of Jesus.

The original 1972 production was groundbreaking theatre in that the audience was engaged through games, skits, and participation while listening to a new sound in American musical theatre. While not the first rock musical by any means, Godspell was one of the first musicals to take the contemporary sound of the day and masterfully blend it with the traditional sound of a Broadway musical. With a score of classics such as "Day by Day," "Prepare Ye," and "All Good Gifts," there is something for everyone to enjoy!

Leading the cast as Jesus is ATP newcomer Travis Martin, a student at UT who is a member of the Longhorn Singers and was recently seen in Let It Be Christmas. Joining him as John the Baptist and Judas is Brian Losoya, who has previously appeared in ATP's Corpus Christi and Edges.

Rounding out the cast is Wendy Jo Cox, who has appeared in Baby and National Pastime, and seven ATP newcomers: Lexie DeAnda, Robert King, Jr., Chelsea Manasseri, Adam Munoz, Meghan Ollivant, Joseph Ruelle, and Amanda Serra.

Godspell is helmed by director Barbara Schuler, music director David Blackburn, and choreographer Sara Burke. Lighting design is by Amy Lewis and the sound designer is Joel Mercado-See. The multi-level set has been designed by technical director Jim Schuler and the costumes have been designed by Veronica Prior. The production is being stage-managed by Heather Thomas.

Tickets for Godspell are now on sale via telephone (1-800-838-3006) or online. Advance sales have been running three times greater than normal, so ATP has added two additional performances on Saturday, August 23rd and a week later on August 30. Both added performances are 2:00 matinees. When tickets are purchased in advance via telephone or online, you will automatically get a 10% savings on your order.

All performances will take place at the Dougherty Arts Center (1110 Barton Springs Road) and will run from August 15 through the 30th. Showtimes are at 7:30 p.m. except on Sundays when performances take place at 3:00 p.m. There will also be two Saturday matinees (2:00 p.m.) on August 23rd and 30th.
