Howard Fishman celebrates the release of his eleventh recording, Uncollected Stories (Monkey Farm Records), featuring members of his live ensemble from across the span of his wide-ranging, genre-bashing career. Howard has been a mainstay at Joe's Pub from the very beginning, and his appearances here have always featured something a little extra special for the hometown crowd -- a new album release, a project debut, a work in progress. Our audiences have come to expect the unexpected at Howard's shows here, and he has never failed to deliver or surprise.

Pianist/singer/songwriter Diane Birch returns with a monthly residency to try some new music, revisit older work and have some fun. Birch marries darkness and light, pain and abandon on Speak A Little Louder (2013, S-Curve Records), her last album. A window into her complex journey into womanhood, the album documented with intense emotional honesty, indelible melodies and rousing hooks. Speak A Little Louder followed Birch's extraordinary 2009 debut, Bible Belt, which opened in the Billboard Top 100 and prompted comparisons to Laura Nyro and Karen Carpenter along with glowing reviews from The New York Times, NPR, Rolling Stone, Vanity Fair and more.

Gina Chavez is a multi-ethnic Latin pop songstress, blending the sounds of the Americas with tension and grace. Her latest album, Up.Rooted, invites us on a sonic journey to uncover her lost Latin roots and has been hailed by The Boston Globe as "an album as confident as it is refreshing," and featured on NPR, USA Today and La Prensa Grafica in El Salvador.
Sandra Lilia Velásquez and Sean Dixon, the Brooklyn-based duo behind SLV, embody a collision of worlds. Velásquez serves as frontwoman of lauded Latin outfit Pistolera, while Dixon plays drums in experimental electronic ensemble Zammuto; but together, they've carved out an exciting new path for themselves. SLV first emerged from the studio in 2013 with a debut EP, Dig Deeper, produced by heavyweight bassist Meshell Ndegeocello.

The Jones Family Singers - a gospel collective comprised in part by seven siblings and their father - have been tearing up churches and festivals alike for over two decades. A follow-up to their globalFEST 2015 performance, the Texas-based group returns to New York. "Modern practitioners of a long musical tradition...infusing their joyful, reverent songs with elements of vintage soul and R&B," said The Wall Street Journal. Spurred by their 2014 debut album The Spirit Speaks, they have performed at Lincoln Center and Kennedy Center, plus Newport Folk Festival, Playboy Jazz Festival, Winnipeg Folk Festival and Monterey Jazz Festival with a two week tour of Russia. Beyond the stage, the group still makes good on their ministry, performing at prisons, interfaith and community events.

English songbird Julia Fordham's remarkable singing and compositions make her a unique voice in more ways than one. Her first release in 1988, Happy Ever After, was an international hit. Fordham's smoky jazz bar low, dulcet voice, the warmth of her delivery and emotive compositions led to major success, with millions of her records selling around the world. This performance celebrates the 25th anniversary of her landmark album Porcelain. Accompanied by her long-time pianist and album producer Grant Mitchell, they will perform the record in its entirety. Fordham will perform many of her hits as well as a few surprises along the way, and will take audience requests at the 11:30pm set.

"You'll survive all of this if it kills you," Django Haskins sings on "Ghosts of Ferriday" on The Old Ceremony's new Yep Roc release Sprinter. Haskins knows a thing or two about endurance. Since its formation in 2004, The Old Ceremony has built a body of recordings that evoke a distinctive musical and lyrical sensibility, while tapping into a rich, unmistakably Southern vein of melodic song-craft and vivid storytelling. In the process, the iconoclastic North Carolina quintet has won a loyal fan base that loves the band's lush, emotionally resonant albums and charismatic, elegant live shows.

Jay Brannan has been writing and performing his own sweet and sad folk songs, tempered with wit since 2006. His string of albums have topped the iTunes Singer-Songwriter and Billboard Heatseekers charts: goddamned, produced by Will Golden (Meiko, Michelle Branch); In Living Cover; and Rob Me Blind, produced by David Kahne (Regina Spektor, The Bangles, Paul McCartney, Kelly Clarkson, Lana Del Rey). Brannan has toured the world, including North America, Europe, Brazil, South Africa, Israel and Australia. His 2013 EP release Around the World in 80 Jays was inspired by those travels. Brannan put out Always, Then, & Now, an album of acoustic originals, in 2014.

Rachel Mason will be performing songs from her acclaimed indie rock opera film, The Lives of Hamilton Fish. Described by the New Yorker as a "Cinematic Rock Opera Performance," the songs weave together a portrait of an uncanny, but true coincidence-- two men, both named Hamilton Fish died a day apart and were immortalized on a single front page of a newspaper- The Evening Star of Peekskill, January 16, 1936.

Joey Arias is well-known to audiences at the Pub for his sold-out series of residencies, including The Joey Arias Experience which featured Arias' interpretations of classic rock from like the likes of Led Zeppelin, Cream and more. Rock & Roll Fantasy sees Arias returning to this material as he welcomes Australian superstar Paul Capsis. Down Under Capsis is well-known not only for his cabaret shows, but for his extensive work in stage, television and film. He last appeared in New York as the star vocalist in the critically acclaimed debut season of "Absinthe" at Spiegelworld.

At home, Ruth and Madisen Ward are mother and son. Onstage, they're the leading members of Madisen Ward & the Mama Bear, a soulful folk band whose sound is anchored by twin guitars and two big, booming voices. The music started in Kansas City, where the younger Ward grew up watching his mom perform cover songs at coffee shops. Before long, he was writing his own tunes, mixing the old-world influence of his family's folk records with the unchained, energetic stomp of modern-day rock. The two began playing shows together, ditching cover songs in favor of Ward's original material. Both sang, played guitar and watched as their band's audience slowly grew.

One of the most exciting bands to come out of the wild late night Nublu scene in the East Village, Forro in the Dark combines the driving dance rhythms of forro from Northeastern Brazil with rock, jazz, reggae, folk and country. Together since 2002, they are based in New York and have collaborated with a wide variety of artists, including David Byrne, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Cibo Matto. Here they take on some of John Zorn's most lyrical and grooving compositions to create a charming album of Brazilian-tinged dance music. Endlessly listenable, this is a record filled with catchy hooks, burning solos, driving rhythms and infectious Zorn melodies, new and old. Produced by Jesse Harris and featuring Brazilian legend Marcos Valle as a special guest.

Dubbed 'Best Lounge Act of 2009' by New York Magazine, Ethan Lipton & His Orchestra play an edgy brand of jazz/folk/alternative nosh with a chewy singer-songwriter center. In many ways, Winter Games is the music Chris Garneau has been trying to make since he was a lonesome kid who competed in Parisian piano competitions and happened to be on a last name basis with Beethoven, Debussy and Brahms. The Skivvies are Lauren Molina and Nick Cearley, award-winning NYC actor/musicians doing stripped down versions of eclectic covers and comedic, genre-hopping mashups. Classically trained Russian pianist and vocalist Ella Leya introduces "a haunting and voluptuous musical tapestry" (Chicago Tribune) in her show Russian Romance. Of this show, The Los Angeles Times said, "It's the voice of Ella Leya that first grabs you. Throaty and with a dark timbre, its velvet surface occasionally tinged with flashes of sunlight, it is an instrument perfectly suited for the intimate expressiveness of songs in the Russian romance style. Leya's style comes from classical roots, but the undercurrents of passion and erotic expressiveness, interspersed with moments of wit, humor and occasional dark deeds, link it to the blues, Portuguese fado, Spanish flamenco and Argentine tango." Janina Gavankar (True Blood and The Mysteries of Laura) will join Leya on stage.

Singer/songwriter Alex Bia was born in Cuba in the small city of Matanzas. Bia has performed to sold out audiences at the Crossroads Theater in New Jersey as well as the Park Theatre. In August, he will be opening for Grammy Award winner Luis Enrigue in Chicago. Additionally, Bia was chosen to record songs by Grammy Award-winning songwriter Chein Garcia Alonso. He is known for his unstoppable energy onstage and a voice filled with soul. His new album Renacer was inspired by the rhythms of Cuba and his own experiences.
