2011 Honolulu Film Awards Honors Best in Industry

Over 200 of Hawaii's and the world's best filmmakers received recognition and honored their peers on Saturday, May 7 at the 2011 Honolulu Film Awards.

The Honolulu Film Awards honor the best from around the world in several competition categories including Feature Films, Documentaries, Short Films, Foreign Films, Hawaiian Films, Action Sports Films, Music Videos, Experimental Films, Television Pilots, Environmental Films, Screenplays and more.

"The Honolulu Film Awards celebrates the industry's most talented filmmakers and acknowledges their work, creativity and achievements," said Sean Stewart, event director, of the Honolulu Film Awards.

The 2011 Awards Ceremony Dinner was held at the Sarento's Top of the "I" restaurant located on the top floor of the beautiful Ilikai Hotel & Suites with breathtaking views of Diamond Head and Waikiki Beach in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Filmmakers in attendance included:
Annie Perkins, Director, "Mila's Journey;" Grand Jury Prize. What do you do when the man you loved lies dying of cancer and hands you a suitcase containing reels of undeveloped 8mm film? It's footage of an amazing trek made in 1976, high up in the Himalayas, that turned out to be a life-changing journey with irrevocable consequences. Mila's Journey follows Mila & her decision to return to India after more than 30 years. The film juxtaposes modern images with the old 8mm footage & pays homage to romance, adventure, spirituality, freedom and female independence. The film shows one Dutch woman's attempt to answer the question 'what would happen if I went back?'

Dana Neves, Director, "The Green Tie Affair;" Best of Hawaii. A short musical about a green tie-wearing puppet who is deprived of his identity when people around him begin to copy his fashion style.

Bret Malley, Director, "Greenwashers;" Best Documentary Short. Yes Men meet the Ad and the Ego. In the spirit of the Corporation and Nothing so Strange, the two characters in this film have been termed as the Borats of the green world. Greenwashers blurs the line between green and greed, truth and believability, environmentalism and marketing. Following a pair of Greenwashers, the film illustrates the various strategies, sins, and consequences of greenwash.
Mary Piller, Director, "Greenwashers;" Best Environmental Film. A documentary about the critically-endangered Hawaiian monk seal, which is the most endangered pinniped in U.S. waters and the Official State Mammal of Hawaii, with rare and exclusive footage of a week-old female monk seal pup named Kai swimming and playing (with trash!). An ancient species, there are only about 1,100 of them left.

Yurij Luhovy, Director, "Genocide Revealed;" Best Historical Film. A historical feature documentary on the Kremlin-engineered genocide of the Ukrainian nation. Focusing on the 1932-1933 artificial famine in Soviet occupied Ukraine and the accompanying executions, repressions and arrests of Ukrainian intellectuals, spiritual leaders and general population, the film depicts one of the greatest human tragedies of the 20th century. Millions perished.
