Nineteenth-century playwright Henrik Ibsen is well known for his intense dramas and Hedda Gabler is no different. Hedda Gabler explores the conflicts of a woman trapped by obligation and her position in society. Hedda, the lead character, returns from her honeymoon consumed by anxiety and regret, bored by her husband and afraid to be a traditional wife. Hedda Gabler is the story of a woman who struggles to escape the various roles that are forced on her. To some she appears to be the epitome of desire, but to others she is a cold-hearted schemer who manipulates those around her. To others, and this is perhaps what Ibsen wants us to take away when we see the play, she is a victim of her time (he wrote the play in 1890), in which a woman of talent is not allowed to have a full place in society.

Hedda Gabler is a remarkable achievement. Irish playwright Brian Friel translates this production which premiered at the Gate Theatre in Dublin, and comes fresh from The Old Vic on London's Westend. The Guardian's Review". The play is considered by some critics to be the female Hamlet. We see a woman operating in a void who must somehow determine her fate--her identity. For many, and this is perhaps the author’s intention, you will define a Hedda that you create in the moment of viewing. Widely regarded as one of the great female roles of all time, Hedda Gabler is indicative of Ibsen’s stamp on modern theatre.
