Alternative country music is becoming increasingly difficult to define. The amorphous genre now requires use of various terms to inveigh the laid-back spirit and cut-loose vibe of the far-from-Nashville sound. Texas country, roots country, red dirt country, Americana...surely there's more to define the kick-back pleasurable and introspective sound.

In their 20th year, Reckless Kelly is all the above and more; a quintet of five amazing singer-songwriter-rockers that have made them among the best in the Texas music scene, balancing rootsy melodies with honky-tonk country flare. Theirs are original songs anchored by dynamic musicianship. Sunset Motel, the band's September 2016 album release (their 9th) was promptly named the #10 Best Essential Album of 2016 and scored a 2017 Grammy nomination- a follow-up to their Grammy-winning, ballad rich Long Night Moon - with such tartly honest roots-rocking tunes about heartache and indecision as "How Can You Love Him (You Don't Even Like Him)," "Moment in the Sun," and "One More Last time," as well as the social commentary of "Radio" and the upbeat honky tonk urgency of "Volcano."

Endorsed and embraced by such Texas country kingsmen as Joe Ely and Robert Earl Keen, these guys are mainstays in the Austin music scene. No band exemplifies the broad genre of alt-country better! Check out Reckless Kelly live at the Spencer on Friday, June 23 at 8 p.m. Tickets start at just $39. Call the box office at 575.336.4800 or visit spencertheater.com for tickets.

A pre-show enchiladas & rellenos buffet ($20) is also available in the lobby at 6 p.m.
