Now Playing Onstage in Albuquerque - Week of 3/16/2014 RACHAEL SAGE
The Cooperage
3/18-3/18/2014
A soulful vocalist and innovative keyboardist, singer/songwriter and producer Rachael Sage [web site | Amazon.com] has become one of the busiest touring artists in independent music, performing 150+ dates a year throughout the US, UK, Europe and Asia. She has earned a loyal following for her infectious melodies, poetic lyrics, and often-outrageous, colorful stage banter. Sage has shared stages with Sarah McLachlan, Colin Hay, Marshall Crenshaw, Marc Cohn, The Animals and Ani DiFranco. She has performed at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and received numerous songwriting awards, including the John Lennon Songwriting Contest (Grand Prize) and several Independent Music Awards and OUTMusic Awards. Rachael Sage's latest album, Haunted By You, is a song cycle about passion. As she explains, "I fell recklessly in and out of love multiple times while writing this record. I broke a couple hearts... and I also had my heart broken pretty badly." Nonetheless, the crystalline-voiced singer/songwriter says she has no regrets, revealing she was "due to feel as deeply again as when I first started making music."

Popejoy Hall
3/20-3/22/2014
The weird and wonderful family comes to devilishly delightful life in THE ADDAMS FAMILY. This magnificently macabre new musical comedy is "a visually satisfying, rib-tickling, lunatic musical that will entertain you to death!" says Toronto Post City. Created by Jersey Boys authors Marshall Brickman & Rick Elice, Drama Desk-winning composer/lyricist Andrew Lippa (The Wild Party), choreographer Sergio Trujillo (Jersey Boys) and Olivier Award-winning costume and set designers Phelim McDermott & Julian Crouch (Shockheaded Peter) with direction by four-time Tony Award« winner Jerry Zaks, THE ADDAMS FAMILY "is full of charm, wit and surprises that explain why it's a hit on its national tour" (CBS New Orleans). THE ADDAMS FAMILY features an original story and it's every father's nightmare. Wednesday Addams, the ultimate princess of darkness, has grown up and fallen in love with a sweet, smart young man from a respectable family. A man her parents have never met. And if that weren't upsetting enough, she confides in her father and begs him not to tell her mother. Now, Gomez Addams must do something he's never done before - keep a secret from his beloved wife, Morticia. Everything will change for the whole family on the fateful night they host a dinner for Wednesday's "normal" boyfriend and his parents. Come meet the family. We'll leave the lights off for you.

Since the group's inception in late 2007, Portland Cello Project (or PCP, as their fans affectionately call them), has wowed audiences all over the country with extravagant performances, mixing genres and blurring musical lines and perceptions wherever they go. No two shows are alike, with a repertoire now numbering over 900 pieces of music you wouldn't normally hear coming out of a cello. This early show will have the theme "Goodbye Winter." On a primal, human level, the Oregonians of PCP have had many sustained opportunities to research cold and wet winters. Portland winters are long. Cold weather and rain often last until the Fourth of July. Once the leaves are gone from the trees, the long season begins.

Now Playing Onstage in Albuquerque - Week of 3/16/2014 CINDERELLA
Volcano Vista High School
3/21-3/29/2014
The timeless enchantment of a magical fairy tale is reborn with the Rodgers & Hammerstein hallmarks of originality, charm and elegance. Originally presented on television in 1957 starring Julie Andrews, Rodgers & Hammerstein's CINDERELLA was the most widely viewed program in the history of the medium. Its recreation in 1965 starring Lesley Ann Warren was no less successful in transporting a new generation to the miraculous kingdom of dreams-come-true, and so was a second remake in 1997, which starred Brandy as Cinderella and Whitney Houston as her Fairy Godmother. As adapted for the stage, with great warmth and more than a touch of hilarity, the hearts of children and adults alike still soar when the slipper fits.Music by Rodgers, Richard; Book by Oscar Hammerstein II; Lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II

Now Playing Onstage in Albuquerque - Week of 3/16/2014 THE PEARL FISHERS
National Hispanic Cultural Center
3/23-3/30/2014
Before Carmen, there was The Pearl Fishers. This sparklingly novel work by the youthful Bizet (just 24 when the opera was composed) foreshadows all of the brilliance that was to come later. The duet "Au fond du temple saint" is probably the single most famous duet for tenor-baritone in all of opera. Focused on the love triangle between Leila, Nadir, and Zurga, the drama unfolds against a delightfully inventive and tuneful musical backdrop that has an especially prominent role for the chorus, which acts almost as a "fifth character". This production will feature our first-ever collaboration with the New Mexico Symphonic Chorus under the direction of Maestro Roger Melone. Opera Southwest welcomes Soprano Shana Blake Hill (Violetta, La Traviata 2011) back to the stage as the beautiful Leila.

Now Playing Onstage in Albuquerque - Week of 3/16/2014 HEMBRAS DE PLUMA
National Hispanic Cultural Center
3/20-3/30/2014
Hembras de Pluma is a collective of women artists who have come together to present our personal stories of childhood, growing older, loss, love, grief, and joy. As comadres, we would often sit around the table and share stories with one another, laughing and crying, dreaming and remembering. In the summer of 2013, we decided to write and perform these stories as a way to honor our histories, our ancestors, our families, and ourselves. We present nine original stories in the form of monologues, poetry, and short plays. We call our collective Hembras de Pluma. Feathered women. Women wielding the pen. Hembra is woman, feminine, rooted. Pluma is pen or feather. When we work in a collective spirit with the intention of lifting each other up, we all benefit. We lift our voices to the sky and take flight. Hembras de Pluma is presented as part of Women & Creativity 2014 by Las Meganenas and the National Hispanic Cultural Center.
