Now Playing Onstage in Albuquerque - Week of 3/09/2014 MY FAVORITE YEAR
The Adobe Theater
2/21-3/14/2014
This musical comedy by the award-winning musical team of Ahrens and Flaherty (Lucky Stiff, Ragtime, Seussical, Once on this Island) is based on the successful movie of the same name. Benjy Stone is a first-year writer on the "King Kaiser Comedy Cavalcade" TV show (it smacks of Your Show of Shows starring Sid Caesar). The guest host for this week is Allan Swann, an over-the hill drunken, swashbuckling movie star. Benjy writes the script for a 3 Musketeers sketch, is ordered to keep Swann sober and under control, accompanies Swann to dinner at his mother's Brooklyn apartment, and ultimately convinces Swann to reconcile with his estranged daughter. (oh - and Benjy gets the show's female assistant as his girlfriend). Much of the comedy results from a behind-the-scenes look at the preparations for the TV show. It features a hilarious script and superb music.

Popejoy Hall
3/14-3/14/2014
Since their beginnings in 1974 performing in Off-Off Broadway lofts, Les Ballets Trockadero (the Trocks) have presented a playful, entertaining view of traditional, classical ballet in parody form and en travesti. Professional male dancers perform the full range of ballet and modern dance repertoire. The fact that men dance all the parts - heavy bodies delicately balancing on toes as swans, sylphs, water sprites, romantic princesses, or angst-ridden Victorian ladies - enhances, rather than mocks, the spirit of dance as an art form, delighting and amusing aficionados and neophytes alike.

North 4th Theatre

Mix the Hot Club of Paris with the sweaty soul of Dixieland, a couple blades of bluegrass, a pinch of ragtime beat, and a western swinging swagger and you've just conjured the sound of The Appleseed Collective. "The blends of swing, bluegrass, Dixieland ditties and alluring gypsy-folk whirls is something close to a transcendent listen... you're there, on some dirt road, being led on by these songs," wrote iSpy Magazine of their album Baby to Beast.

She has performed at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and received numerous songwriting awards, including the John Lennon Songwriting Contest (Grand Prize) and several Independent Music Awards and OUTMusic Awards. Rachael Sage's latest album, Haunted By You, is a song cycle about passion. As she explains, "I fell recklessly in and out of love multiple times while writing this record. I broke a couple hearts... and I also had my heart broken pretty badly." Nonetheless, the crystalline-voiced singer/songwriter says she has no regrets, revealing she was "due to feel as deeply again as when I first started making music."
