MarchFourth Marching Band to Kick Off AMP Concerts' Jan-Feb 2014 Lineup; Concerts Announced!

AMP Concerts' January lineup has two themes associated with it - the Revolutions International Theatre Festival and Hawaii.
On the Revolutions front, returning will be one of AMP's favorite bands as part of the festival. MarchFourth Marching Band's theatrical, gypsy/punk/cabaret/band vibe is a perfect match for Revolutions and the first concert of the New Year (Jan 24 at the Sunshine Theater). AMP will also be presenting one of the homegrown Tricklock productions - "The Menu" - as part of its free library series in late January.
AMP is also looking at creating themed months when it makes sense. In January, AMP will be celebrating Hawaii in conjunction with its third straight year of presenting a Hawaiian Masters concert featuring George Kahumoku Jr and friends (Jan 25 at South Broadway Cultural Center). This year he's bringing along Ledward Ka'apana, an NEA Heritage Fellow on his first visit to New Mexico. George and Led will be offering Hawaiian slack key guitar and ukulele workshops before the show, Pacific Paradise restaurant will be on-hand with Hawaiian food and hula dancing from Ha'aheo O Hawai'i. Those two groups will be teaming up for Wednesday night Hawaiian events at the restaurant on January 25 and 22, and you can also enjoy a free introductory hula class.
In February, AMP will be creating a series of events focusing on Galicia (northern Spain) in conjunction with AMP's visit from master Galician pipe Carlos Núñez. The National Hispanic Cultural Center, Instituto Cervantes and UNM's Latin American & Iberian Studies program will work with AMP to provide Galician cooking classes and a lecture, with some more programs still in development.

He will be joined by Led Kaapana, whose mastery of stringed instruments, particularly slack key guitar, and his extraordinary baritone and leo ki`eki`e (falsetto) voices, have made him a musical legend.

Leon Russell has been called a rock and roll Renaissance man, and indeed there is little that this Oklahoma-bred singer-pianist hasn't done. His half-century in music stretches from his teen years in Oklahoma in the late Fifties (after Leon graduated from high school, his band, the Starlighters, went on the road with Jerry Lee Lewis) to his recent inductions into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriter's Hall of Fame, as well as his collaboration with Elton John. Over the course of five decades, Russell has proven himself to be a proudly eclectic product of America's vast musical landscape.

For the last fifteen years, singer/songwriter/guitarist Todd Tijerina has steadily made a living playing his unique blend of blues, funk, roots-rock and jazz. Rootstime magazine (Belgium) declared that Todd "creates his own style and sound... His manner of guitar playing, singing and songwriting is refreshing and inspiring." Todd's "Nothin' Like the Blues" won the 2011 New Mexico Music Award for Best Blues Song.

The Boston-formed Pixies have been acclaimed as the most influential pioneering band of the late 80s alt/rock movement. Their five studio releases and initial six years together effectively blazed the path for groups like Nirvana, Radiohead and Pearl Jam to rise to superstardom. After reuniting in 2004, the band has been playing sold-out shows all over the world. For this tour, the band is promising the most wide-ranging concert set-lists of Pixies music in their career, including songs never before played live. Surf-pop band Best Coast will open the show.

Carlos Núñez is one of Galicia's most revered artists, undisputed as the tradition's greatest piper. He is well known in Irish music circles, thanks to his early "adoption" by The Chieftains (so close was his musical and personal connection he was dubbed "The Seventh Chieftain"). Núñez's music draws on influences that range from ancient and contemporary Celtic (with a unique Spanish swing) to Medieval and Baroque, and also borrows from the sounds and styles of the places where Galicians have settled, including Cuba, Brazil, Argentina, even the United States.
