Lambda Archives presents Lillian Faderman on Harvey Milk

Lambda Archives next installment of their Out at the Archives series will feature Lillian Faderman presenting "The Lives and Death of Harvey Milk" on May 23rd. There will be an opportunity for attendees to meet Professor Faderman at a VIP reception beginning at 6:30, prior to the 7:30 presentation at Diversionary Theatre, 4545 Park Blvd.

A noted historian and author of several other books of LGTBQ history, Faderman said, "Harvey Milk is considered not only a gay martyr but also an enduring American icon. In 1999, more than twenty years after his assassination, Time Magazine named him on its list of 'The 100 Most Influential Individuals of the 20th Century.'"

Jen LaBarbera, head archivist of Lambda Archives said, "One of the great things about having Professor Faderman as Lambda Archives' historian in residence is her ability to bring her deep expertise to events such as this. We know her book will provide new insights into the life of Harvey Milk and are looking forward to her sharing some of those at Out at the Archives."

Faderman is the author of a forthcoming book The Lives and Death of Harvey Milk (Yale University Press, 2018), and will present some of her research and show some newly-discovered Harvey Milk photographs.

Faderman said that the honors continue to pour in even all of these years after Milk's death: "In 2009, President Barack Obama bestowed on him a posthumous Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian honor. In 2014, the U.S. Post Office issued a stamp with his image. In 2016, the Secretary of the Navy announced that a Combat Logistics ship would be named the USNS Harvey Milk. Who was this complex man? What made him tick? What did he contribute to the struggle for LGBT civil rights? And why is he the most honored gay figure in modern history?"

This is the second event Faderman has done for Lambda Archives and as Historian in Residence, she will continue to share her knowledge and scholarship with the Archives staff and also with the public at other events.

Admission to the VIP reception is $20 for Archives members and $25 for the public and this price includes admission to the presentation.
