Gregg Allman Dead at 69

Billboard has reported that singer-songwriter Gregg Allman has passed away at age 69. His band, The Allman Brothers, originated hits including 'Ramblin' Man', 'Melissa', and 'Midnight Rider'.

Allman's official website stated he "passed away peacefully at his home in Savannah, Georgia" while the family was quoted discussing his health troubles such as hepatitis C and a liver transplant saying, "Gregg struggled with many health issues over the past several years. During that time, Gregg considered being on the road playing music with his brothers and solo band for his beloved fans, essential medicine for his soul. Playing music lifted him up and kept him going during the toughest of times."

Upon learning of the passing of southern rock icon Gregg Allman, Marshall Tucker Band lead singer Doug Gray released the following statement:

"A very sad show day for me. Gregg was a guy that showed me more respect in our business than anyone else. He also taught me how to please an audience with your voice and pour your heart out and never regret. Ride in Peace, my friend."

ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND in 2004 featured founding members GREGG ALLMAN (keyboards, vocals) and drummers BUTCH TRUCKS and JAIMOE along with longtime percussionist MARC QUINONES, guitarists WARREN HAYNES and DEREK TRUCKS and bassist OTEIL BURBRIDGE. Guitarist JACK PEARSON, who was in the band from 1997-99, was a special guest. Other guests include Derek's bandmate/wife Susan Tedeschi, guitarist Vaylor Trucks (Butch's son who was captured on the rear cover of Brothers & Sisters as a child) and keyboardist Rob Baracco (Phil Lesh Quintet/Other Ones).
